There are no moments ― 3 min read

Stream in a forest

Nothing has happened in the past; it happened in the Now. Nothing will ever happen in the future; it will happen in the Now.

—Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment

There are no moments just as there are no things. All of life is but a single timeless moment. You can never escape it and you can never get outside of it. You can think of the past and remember things, but those memories only exist in as much as they are phenomena occurring right now. Likewise the future only exists as a thought experience in the now. We can never reach the future because the moment we do we find it is actually the present. This is all there is. That is what makes it holy. That and the fact that this is everything that is.

God himself culminates in the present moment, and will never be more divine in the lapse of all the ages.

—Henry David Thoreau, Walden

Perhaps when we lose consciousness or die we can escape the present? But if indeed we do lose consciousness there is no "I" anymore that can say they've escaped or moved beyond this moment. As such it is clear that we are inextricably bound to the present. What is curious though is how much of our lives we spend seemingly unaware of this immediate and obvious truth. We lose ourselves projecting ourselves backwards and forwards through time.

From all sides, then, our present is bounded, sandwiched in between past and future. It is limited, fenced, restricted. It is not an open moment; it is a squeezed moment, a pressed moment, and therefore a fleeting moment. It just passes. Since the past and the future seem so real, our present moment, the very meat of the sandwich, is reduced to a mere thin slice, so that our reality soon becomes all bread-ends with no filling.

—Ken Wilber, No Boundary: Eastern and Western Approaches to Personal Growth

Search for the beginning of this moment, can you find it? Or if you wait long enough can you find when it ends?

The present has no beginning and it has no end. This moment is eternal. There is no future or past that lies outside, in fact there is nothing that lies outside. Right now is all there is and it is everything that is.

At the deepest level of Being, you are one with all that is

—Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment

It is now and we are here.
